    Goiter – What It Is, Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment

    Living a healthy life as a person should not be complicating or time consuming if you care about your health. Many care less about their health and that has resulted them into getting entangled in one chronic diseases or the other.

    Goitre is a common disease mostly among the aged. It is a swelling of the thyroid gland in the front of the neck which appears especially when swallowing and there is a movement of the enlarge mass of the gland from the top to the bottom.

    It is normally in the form of a butterfly shape in the neck which produces gland hormones. The main function of the thyroid gland is to regulate the metabolism and chemical processes that occur in the body.

    Symptoms

    Symptoms of goitre may include tightness in throat, breathing difficulty, swallowing difficulty, coughing and changes to your voice. Having these symptoms should clearly tell you that you must see your doctor to have a check around your neck region. All person are liable to experience the abnormal growth of the in the trachea.

    Causes

    This may include hormonal changes during puberty and pregnancy, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism and menopause.

    Treatment

    A thyroid function test may be conducted to see how well it has swollen. The test also measure the the level of certain hormones in your body. Having an underactive or overactive thyroid can be closely linked to your possibility of getting goiter.

    Referring to a specialist for treatment is the best idea one can think of since the treatment depend on the main cause. If the goiter is small, a radioactive iodine is given orally to reduce the size of the thyroid gland. Also, if the goiter is large, a possible thyroid surgery is done to remove part or all in the thyroid gland.
